Though his career was tragically cut short by an accidental explosion aboard the USS Princeton in 1844, Gilmer’s legacy as a respected leader and public servant continues to be remembered in Virginia’s history. His connection to Goochland highlights the county’s long tradition of producing individuals who helped shape the nation.
